Week 10, Post 1: Blogging for Business

Is Human Interest Important?

Absolutely! Adding human interest to your blog post is pretty much the bread and butter of appealing to people. When looking at products for potential purchase, people want to feel they are the ones in control. If you are just marketing your product/service from your business' standpoint, people tend to see through the flare; of course your business is going to tell them your product is great, because you want their money. People would rather see other "non-biased" sources recommending your product, even if it's just a real person (which could indeed be potentially biased), making conversation through a blogBy showing your product being used by other people, or showing real-world people commenting or talking about it, a sense of trust in potential customers is developed. It makes them feel in control, and that they are making an educated decision based on their own judgement, not just on your business' recommendation. People are much more likely to purchase from this kind of experience.

While content that includes scientific findings, or more fact-based information, may require a more straight forward approach, I think that it almost always makes sense to add at least a little bit of personal touch to a post. I believe that in today's world, personality makes a business stand out more-so than a standard text-book, A+B=C approach. Why? Because people get bored. Even if you have an article describing how to take apart a car, or put together a television, etc, I think that adding a distinct voice to the writing helps readers to connect with and enjoy it.This is very important in business, as you want your audience to engage with you and feel a sense of understanding/connection with who you are and what you are trying to sell them.

  1. I have to agree with many of your statements but especially "personality makes a business stand out more-so than a standard text-book, A+B=C approach". It's true, people get bored quite easily and it's hard to keep the engagement up because it's constantly changing.

  2. Good discussion on the need to add some flair to keep people interested, especially the bit Sadegh quoted above! At the end of the day, writing is writing, and tone and voice are huge parts of any piece of physical or digital copy.
