5 Businesses that Utilize Social Media:

Veterinary Specialty Hospital of North County

LinkedIn: 1,539 Followers. Last post: 2 months ago

Overall, social media is being utilized well. Facebook and Instagram seem to be the most used.

Instagram is most used. Very high social media presence. 

Smitty’s Downtown

The only verified social media site I found (other than Yelp), is Facebook. They do not even list it on their website, but you can find it via Google. They do not seem to utilize social media very much, though they have a ton of check-ins. 

Vista Village Pub

Instagram: 1,703 Followers, 548 Posts. Last post: 7/16

While this company utilizes social media more than Smitty’s, they still limit themselves to only Facebook and Instagram. I also found it interesting that they follow 7,444 people, but are only followed by 1,703 people. This probably means that they do a lot of reaching out to people, but may not be successful at it.

Belching Beaver Brewery (Tavern and Grill, Vista CA location)

Twitter: 10K Followers, 2,212 Tweets, 1,937 Likes. Last post: 9/3

This one only lists Facebook and Twitter on their website, but I was able to find an Instagram. There are also separate company social media sites, since there are multiple locations, which I found interesting. 

Overall this assignment was interesting. Expectedly, the more corporate a company is, the more active they are on social media (and the more followers they have). LLL Reptile seemed to have the most variety in social media accounts, perhaps because they make a lot of online sales, and reptiles/invertebrates are a huge hobby for some people. Even still, all 5 businesses have recent posts from at least the past 2 months. 

 It is apparent that people love checking into bars and restaurants, probably due to social expression. They all seem to participate on some form of social media, but may not be the best at marketing that on their websites (the links to Belching Beaver’s social media lead you directly to posting about them, as opposed to going to their actual page for instance). Smitty’s does not even provide a link to their social media sites on their website, though I think it’s neat that even a small dive bar still makes an effort to participate in social media at all. 

I think it’s important that all businesses utilize social media if they hope to be successful. No matter how small the business is, or what industry it is involved with, it is important to create brand awareness and engage your audience.
